The short answer
In the United States, a single mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) or bone-marrow-concentrate joint injection typically costs $5,000-$8,000 per joint, and comprehensive or full-body protocols range from roughly $5,000 to $25,000+. In Mexico, comparable treatments commonly run $3,750-$15,000. Panama, Colombia, and the Cayman Islands are premium destinations where culture-expanded protocols range from roughly $8,000 to $60,000.
Every figure on this page is an estimate that varies by clinic, cell count, and protocol and should be confirmed directly with the provider. Insurance generally does not cover these treatments.
Important Regulatory Notice
The FDA has not approved stem cell therapy for orthopedic, anti-aging, autoimmune, or most chronic conditions. The only FDA-approved stem cell products are a small set of blood- and bone-marrow-derived therapies. Treatments advertised by regenerative clinics β in the US and abroad β are considered experimental for these uses.

Why "cost" is the hardest number to pin down
There is no list price for stem cell therapy. Two clinics in the same city can quote wildly different numbers for what sounds like the same treatment, because the "treatment" is not standardized. What you pay is driven by a handful of variables:
- Cell count β how many million (or hundred million) cells you receive. More cells, higher price.
- Cell source and processing β your own cells harvested same-day (autologous, fresh) vs donor umbilical-cord cells vs culture-expanded cells grown in a lab over weeks. Expansion is the single biggest cost driver.
- Delivery method β a localized joint injection costs less than an IV infusion, which costs less than a multi-site or combined protocol.
- Number of sessions β some protocols are one visit; others span multiple infusions or a two-trip process.
- Condition and complexity β orthopedic joint work sits at the low end; neurological, autoimmune, and cardiac protocols sit at the high end.
- Destination β the US and premium island/Latin-American destinations price highest; Mexico is the value leader.
US stem cell therapy cost
In the United States, regenerative-medicine clinics generally offer autologous treatments β most commonly Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and adipose (fat-derived) preparations. These are cash-pay because insurers classify them as investigational.
US cost ranges (estimates)
| Treatment | Typical US cost |
|---|---|
| Single joint injection (MSC/BMAC) | $5,000-$8,000 per joint |
| Localized / simpler joint protocol | $3,000-$5,000 |
| Comprehensive / multi-site protocol | $5,000-$15,000 |
| Full-body / high-cell-count protocols | up to $25,000+ |
Sources: aggregated US regenerative-clinic pricing, 2026. Bilateral (both-knee) treatment can exceed $10,000-$15,000. Estimates only β confirm with each clinic.
One thing worth knowing before you compare a $7,000 US knee injection to a $4,000 Mexico package: a large 480-patient randomized trial found that MSC knee injections were no more effective than corticosteroid shots at 12 months, though they appeared safe with no serious adverse reactions. Higher cost does not buy proven outcomes. Treat price as one input, not a quality signal.
Mexico stem cell therapy cost
Mexico is the value destination for Americans β partly proximity (Tijuana is 20 minutes from San Diego), partly a regulatory framework (COFEPRIS) that permits mesenchymal stem cell treatments. Clinics there most often use umbilical-cord MSCs. Pricing generally lands well below US figures for comparable work.
Mexico cost ranges by category (estimates)
| Category | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Orthopedic (joints, back, sports injury) | $3,750-$8,000 |
| Anti-aging / longevity | $5,000-$15,000 |
| Autoimmune | $8,000-$20,000 |
| Neurological | $10,000-$25,000 |
| Exosome therapy (cell-free) | $3,000-$10,000 |

Panama, Colombia & Cayman: the premium tier
Outside Mexico, the most-traveled stem cell destinations price higher β largely because they emphasize culture-expanded cells (grown to much larger numbers in a lab over weeks) and all-inclusive packages. Here is how the leading destinations compare, drawn from our country guides:
Cost by destination (estimates)
| Destination | Typical range | What you're paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | $3,750-$15,000 | Proximity, value, umbilical-cord MSCs |
| Colombia (MedellΓn) | $8,000-$25,000 | All-inclusive packages, expanded cells |
| Panama | $25,000-$60,000 | Premium positioning, umbilical-cord MSCs |
| Cayman Islands | $30,000-$60,000 | Culture-expanded cells + strict regulation |

The all-in cost: don't forget the trip
The quoted treatment price is rarely the total you pay. For any destination, budget for:
- Flights: $200-$600 round trip to Mexico; more for Panama, Colombia, or Cayman
- Lodging: $80-$250/night for a typical 3-5 night stay
- Meals & local transport: $30-$75/day (many clinics include airport pickup)
- Follow-up: ask whether labs, imaging, and post-treatment check-ins are included
- Repeat sessions: some protocols recommend more than one visit β clarify before you commit
Does insurance cover any of it?
For orthopedic and most chronic-disease uses, no. Medicare and private insurers classify stem cell therapy for conditions like osteoarthritis as investigational and do not reimburse it. HSA/FSA eligibility is case-by-case and generally requires a qualifying medical expense β ask your plan administrator before assuming it applies. Plan to pay out of pocket.
How to compare quotes without getting burned
Because pricing isn't standardized, the only fair comparison is apples-to-apples on what's actually delivered. When you collect quotes, normalize on:
- Cell count and source β how many cells, from where, fresh or expanded?
- What's included β consult, labs, imaging, the treatment itself, and follow-up
- Number of sessions in the quoted price
- Regulatory standing β COFEPRIS (Mexico), local licensure, lab certifications
- Realistic expectations β be wary of any clinic quoting a price and a guaranteed result

Frequently asked questions
How much does stem cell therapy cost in 2026?
US: $5,000-$8,000 per joint injection, up to $25,000+ for comprehensive protocols. Mexico: $3,750-$15,000. Panama/Colombia/Cayman: roughly $8,000-$60,000 for premium culture-expanded protocols. All estimates β confirm with each clinic.
Does insurance cover stem cell therapy?
For osteoarthritis and most chronic conditions, no β Medicare and private insurers classify it as investigational. The few FDA-approved stem cell products (blood/marrow transplant indications) are exceptions and are not what regenerative clinics offer.
Why is it cheaper in Mexico?
Lower labor, facility, and malpractice costs plus a different regulatory framework (COFEPRIS). A lower price does not imply equal or better quality or outcomes.
What makes one treatment cost more than another?
Cell count, cell source/processing (fresh vs culture-expanded), number of sessions, delivery method, the condition treated, and the destination. Expanded autologous protocols cost the most.
